Ghanian International Christian Atsu Confirmed Death After Turkey Earthquake

The world of football was shaken to its core when news broke that Ghanaian football star Christian Atsu had been found dead under the rubble almost two weeks after an earthquake struck Turkey and Syria. Atsu, who had played for premier league sides Chelsea, New castle united and Everton, had been playing for Super Lig side Hatayspor before his tragic demise.

The earthquake, which occurred on Monday 6 February 2023, caused the collapse of Atsu’s apartment in the city of Hatay, in which he was staying. Despite rumors that he had been rescued with injuries, it was later revealed that the Ghanaian international had not been seen since the disaster.

“It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce to all well-wishers that sadly Christian Atsu’s body was recovered this morning…” announced Atsu’s agent Nana Sechere on Twitter. Atsu leaves behind his wife and three children.

But Atsu’s legacy extends far beyond the world of football. He was an ambassador for Arms Around the Child, a children’s charity based in Ghana, South Africa and India that provides homes, protection, education and support for children. In 2018, he paid the fines of 53 poor people who were in prison for petty crimes in Ghana and gave them money to start a business. He also upgraded the football pitch in Awutu Prison Camp, donated to schools and hundreds of items to an orphanage in Senya Berekum, and even paid for a prisoner’s surgery.

Atsu’s selfless acts of kindness, he has left a lasting impact on the lives of countless individuals.
