GRASS TO GRACE, REFUGEE TO FOOTBALL LEGEND: STORY OF ALPHONSO DAVIES

From a refugee camp in Ghana to the global stage, Alphonso Davies’ journey is a testament to the power of positivity. Fleeing the civil war in Liberia, his family found a new home in Canada, where Davies’ love for football blossomed. At just 15 years old, he began playing professionally and soon made history as the youngest player ever on Canada’s Men’s National Team.

Davies’ talent and determination have taken him to incredible heights. He became the first player born in the 2000s to play in a major league soccer match, and in 2019, he joined Bayern Munich on a contract lasting until 2023. His impressive performance earned him the title of Bundesliga Rookie of the Season for 2019/2020, and he was part of the team that won the continental treble.

But Davies’ success isn’t just measured by his athletic achievements. He is a Global Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), using his platform to aid and protect refugees around the world. In 2020, he supported UNHCR through a livestream tournament for refugees, and in 2021, he helped launch a Canadian Government campaign to promote access to quality education for refugees globally.

As he prepares to represent Canada in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Davies is celebrated as one of the best left backs in the world. His story is a reminder that with positivity and determination, anything is possible.
