CEMAC Sub-Region Introduces New Currency with Multiple Languages

The Central Bank of Africa has made a groundbreaking move by introducing a new banknote for the CEMAC sub-region. The new currency, which was launched yesterday on December 15th, 2022, features notes of 500, 1000, 2000, 5000, and 10000 FCFA. This new banknote will be used in all states within the CEMAC sub-region, including Cameroon, Congo, Gabon, CAR, Chad, and Equatorial Guinea.

What’s even more impressive is that the new banknote features multiple languages, including English, French, Arabic, and Spanish. This marks the first time that CEMAC has promoted all official languages within the region. The quality of the new banknote has also been improved upon, making it more durable and resistant to water damage.

In central Africa, the renewal of bank notes and coins takes place after every 10years. This was however not the case with the old bank note as it was officially launched in November 2003 and should have been withdrawn in 2012 but it hard to continue circulating until December 2022.

However, some Cameroonians have expressed concerns about the new banknotes. They fear that the increased production of counterfeit notes may lead to financial losses for users who are not yet familiar with the new currency. But the Central Bank has taken measures to ensure the security of the new banknotes by incorporating the latest technological innovations in their manufacturing process.

It’s important to note that the introduction of new banknotes does not mean an increase in the quantity of money in circulation. Instead, it’s meant to accelerate the speed of circulation, improve its security, and enhance its quality. The Central Bank will also handle the withdrawal of old banknotes from circulation.

Overall, this move by CEMAC is a significant step towards promoting inclusivity and unity within the sub-region.
